Body Fat Calculator

Estimate your body fat percentage with the U.S. Navy circumference method, which needs nothing but a tape measure.

How It Works

The U.S. Navy body fat method estimates body composition from circumference measurements alone — no scales-while-underwater, no scans. It dates to 1985 circumference studies run for the U.S. Navy, where tape measurements were statistically fitted against hydrostatic (underwater) weighing; the resulting equations are logarithmic fits, which is why the formula below uses log10 of inches.

The formula (measurements in inches)
Men: % fat = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Women: % fat = 163.205 × log10(waist + hips − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387
Why women add a hip measurement
Adult women typically store a larger share of body fat on the hips, buttocks and thighs, so waist alone under-describes total fat for them. Adding the widest hip circumference into the waist + hips − neck term re-balances the fit against the reference method; men's fat pattern is centered enough that the Navy data did not need a hip term.
Known biases
Like any regression from population data, the method has systematic limits: comparisons with DEXA suggest it tends to slightly overestimate body fat in leaner adults and slightly underestimate it at higher BMIs, and results move noticeably with small tape placement errors. Treat a single reading as approximate and watch trends over repeated measurements under the same conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the US Navy method compared with DEXA or skinfold calipers?

On average it tracks DEXA within a few percentage points of body fat across a large population, but the individual error margin is wider — results are sensitive to exactly where the tape sits and how firm it is. Skinfold calipers can be more accurate in skilled hands but depend heavily on the technician. Use the Navy method for consistent self-tracking over time rather than as a lab-grade single reading.

Why does the waist measurement spot matter?

The formula's coefficients were fitted to specific anatomical landmarks: men measure at the navel, women at the narrowest point of the waist (plus the widest point of the hips). Measuring even a few centimeters off shifts the result by several percentage points. Use a soft tape at the end of a normal exhale, snug but not compressing the skin, and do not suck in.

Can I use it for kids or teens?

No — the formula was derived and validated on adults. Children and adolescents have different fat distribution and proportions, and body-fat estimates for them use different age- and sex-specific reference methods. For anyone under 18, ask a pediatric healthcare provider.

Is this medical advice?

No. These are estimates for general information — not medical advice. A circumference-based body fat percentage cannot assess metabolic health, organ fat or nutritional status. Discuss body composition goals with a qualified healthcare professional.

Is anything uploaded to a server?

No. The whole calculator is a few lines of vanilla JavaScript running in your browser. Your measurements and results never leave your device — there is no account, no tracking and no network request attached to a calculation.
