How It Works

HEIC has been Apple's default photo format since iOS 17 — its files are roughly 50% smaller than equivalent JPEGs, but many browsers, office suites and websites still cannot open them. This tool decodes each HEIC or HEIF file in your browser using heic-to, which wraps a WebAssembly decoder, then re-encodes the pixels to the format you pick. No photo ever leaves your device.

JPG or PNG

JPG is the default and the most compatible choice for sharing photos; the quality slider (0.5–1.0) controls how aggressive the compression is. PNG is lossless — larger files, zero additional detail loss — and is the better pick when you plan to edit the image further. The quality slider is disabled for PNG since it has no effect there.

Quality and size

Because the photo is re-encoded once (HEIC to pixels to JPG/PNG), the output size depends on your quality setting and, if you choose one, a maximum-dimension preset. Constraining the longest side to 4096 or 2048 px downscales through a high-quality canvas resample and can cut file size several-fold for web use.

Orientation and metadata

Rotated iPhone shots are rendered through a canvas, so the EXIF orientation flag is applied and the output is upright everywhere. Be aware of the trade-off: because the image is re-encoded, original EXIF metadata (GPS, capture date, camera model) is not carried into the JPG/PNG output.
