How It Works

PNG and JPG solve different problems. PNG stores every pixel losslessly — sharp edges, text and transparency survive intact — which is why screenshots, logos and UI captures are PNG, and why photographs saved as PNG are needlessly large. JPG trades a little fidelity for dramatically smaller files and is the universal format for photos: email attachments, marketplace listings, upload forms and messaging apps all expect it. This tool re-encodes each PNG through the browser canvas: the pixels are drawn onto a solid white background (JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency must be flattened), then saved as JPG at the quality you pick. Everything runs locally in your tab — no image is ever uploaded.

Quality and size
The default 0.92 is visually indistinguishable from the source for photographs. Dropping to 0.7–0.8 can cut file size by half or more; below that, compression artifacts start to appear around sharp edges — screenshots and text-heavy images are the first to suffer, so keep the quality high for those.
Transparency
JPG cannot store an alpha channel, so transparent regions are flattened onto white before encoding. Semi-transparent pixels are alpha-composited over that white. If preserving transparency matters — overlays, logos, sprites — keep the PNG, or convert to a format that supports alpha.
Metadata
The image is re-encoded through a canvas, so the output is a clean JPG: original EXIF metadata (GPS coordinates, capture date, camera model) is not carried over. For photos where you want the metadata intact, keep the original file as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The converter is a web page — open it and drop your PNG files. Decoding uses the browser's native image pipeline, so there is no app, plugin or account required.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are flattened onto a solid white background before saving. If you need to keep transparency, keep the PNG — or use a format that supports alpha such as WebP.

Is quality lost when converting?

PNG is lossless and JPG is lossy, so there is exactly one lossy re-encode. At the default quality 0.92 the difference from the original is essentially invisible; 0.7–0.8 produces much smaller files, and lower values will start to show artifacts.

Why is the JPG sometimes smaller than the PNG?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, with compression tuned for sharp edges, text and flat color — which is why screenshots and logos are PNG, and why photos saved as PNG are needlessly large. JPG's compression is tuned for photographs, so photographic images shrink dramatically while a screenshot may barely compress at all.

Is anything uploaded to a server?

No. Each image is read with the File API and processed entirely in your browser tab. There is no upload endpoint, no account and no network request carrying your image data.
