Why WebP

WebP is a modern image format designed to make the web faster. For the same visual quality as a JPG or PNG, a WebP file is typically 25–35% smaller. That matters because images are usually the heaviest part of a page: a photo that drops from 400 KB to 280 KB is a faster page, less mobile data and a better experience for every visitor.

Lossy vs lossless
Like JPG, WebP can compress lossy — trading a little detail for a much smaller file — which is what the quality slider controls. It also supports true lossless mode and alpha transparency, so the same format can handle photos, screenshots, logos and UI elements.
How this tool converts
Your image is decoded by the browser onto a canvas at its original dimensions, then the canvas is re-encoded as WebP with the quality you chose. The comparison panel shows the original size next to the new one so you can see exactly how much you saved.
Browser support
Every current browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge — can display WebP images, which is why it has become a standard format for the web. You can serve the converted file anywhere a normal image file is accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WebP and why use it?

WebP is a modern image format created by Google. Compared to PNG and JPG of the same visual quality, WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller, which means faster page loads and lower bandwidth. It supports lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency, so it works for photos, screenshots and logos alike.

What quality setting should I use?

The default of 80 is a good starting point: files usually shrink dramatically with barely visible quality loss. Use 90+ when the image is important and you want to preserve detail, or 60–75 for thumbnails and background images where size matters more than perfect fidelity.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. WebP supports alpha channels, so PNG images with transparent areas keep their transparency when converted. If you convert a JPG, it has no transparency to begin with, so there is nothing to lose.

What happens to animated GIFs?

Only the first frame is converted. The browser's canvas decodes a GIF as a single still image, so animation is not preserved. If you need a WebP that keeps animation, that requires a dedicated encoder which does not exist in every browser.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens entirely on your device with the browser's canvas. Your image is read locally, re-encoded to WebP locally, and downloaded locally — there are no network requests and nothing ever leaves your browser.
