Favicon Sizes

Favicons are served in several sizes because browsers display them in very different contexts — a 16 px tab icon and a 512 px PWA icon look nothing alike. This tool produces PNGs for all six common sizes at once, so you can drop them into your site and be done. Below is what each size is typically used for.

16 px
The classic size for browser tabs and the address bar bookmark star. It is the minimum you should always ship; most users will never see anything smaller.
32 px
Bookmark lists, high-DPI (retina) tabs and link previews on some platforms. A crisp 32 px icon prevents the blurry look when the tab bar is zoomed in.
48 px
Higher-resolution tab bars, some browser UI elements and quick-launch icons on Windows. It doubles as the 24 px icon on 2x screens.
64 px
Mobile app shortcuts and higher-density displays. It is the largest size most "classic" favicon implementations use.
180 px
The Apple touch icon (apple-touch-icon) size: what iOS and iPadOS place on the home screen when a user adds your site to their home screen.
512 px
PWA (progressive web app) manifest icons and high-resolution install prompts. It can also be used as the large install icon on Android.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a favicon and why do I need multiple sizes?

A favicon is the small icon shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and address bars. Browsers use different sizes in different places: 16 px in tabs, 32 px in bookmarks, 180 px for Apple touch icons on iOS and 512 px for PWA manifests. Supplying one image per size keeps the icon crisp everywhere instead of being stretched or blurry.

How does the generator resize my image?

The browser's Canvas API resamples the original pixels with high-quality bilinear smoothing, scaling to fit the target square while preserving the aspect ratio. The result is centered on the canvas, with the optional padding leaving transparent space around it.

What do the rounded corners do?

When enabled, every favicon is clipped to a square with rounded corners (radius = 22% of the side length), which is the shape most mobile platforms apply to app icons automatically. The corners become transparent PNG regions, so the effect works on any background.

Why is the output PNG and not ICO?

PNG is universally supported: every modern browser reads a PNG favicon at any size through a plain icon link tag, and the 512 px PNG doubles as a PWA manifest icon. ICO files are a legacy format; if you truly need one, several free converters can bundle the PNGs this tool produces into a single .ico.

What file types and sizes are accepted?

PNG, JPG and WebP up to 20 MB. Transparency is preserved for PNG and WebP input; JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas do not survive. Everything runs locally in your browser — your image is never uploaded.

For the rest of your brand assets, export every icon size with the App Icon Generator, rasterize a vector using SVG to PNG, or trace a bitmap back into a vector with Image to SVG.
