Tipping is a way to acknowledge good service — in many service jobs the base wage is set low with the expectation that tips make up the difference. The right percentage depends on the type of service and how well you were treated. When in doubt, tip on the pre-tax amount and round sensibly: a little more is always safer than a little less.
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard for table service, with 20% now considered the norm for good service. For fast food or counter service, 5–10% (or a small fixed amount) is typical. For delivery orders, 10–15% is common.
