JPG and WebP are lossy formats — they throw away information that the human eye barely notices to dramatically reduce file size. The quality slider controls how aggressively this happens.

This tool uses the browser's Canvas API. It decodes your image, re-encodes it using the native encoder at a lower quality setting, and gives you the resulting blob. Unlike specialized codecs, it leverages your browser's built-in image encoder — fast, free, and zero dependencies.
For JPG and WebP, quality 0.80-0.85 usually provides an excellent balance — typical file size reduction of 60-75% with nearly invisible quality loss. At 0.60 the reduction is dramatic but you may notice artifacts on close inspection. PNG is lossless by nature, so the quality parameter is effectively ignored.

Yes — but PNG is lossless, so the quality slider has no effect on PNG encoding itself. Converting PNG to WebP with the converter tool (same site) will usually give the best compression ratio for a visually identical result.
No. Your original file stays untouched on disk. The compressor creates a new blob in memory that you download as a separate file with '_compressed' appended to the name. Nothing you upload is ever stored or processed outside your browser.
